Forums — Ask a Colleague

Need answers to technical problems? Want to share your hard earned tips? These on-line forums will put you in contact with your colleagues in the field. If your favorite forum is missing, let us know.

ABRF Forum

The Association of Biological Resource Facilities (ABRF) discussion forum deals with biological techniques and proteomics amongst other things. There are over 200 posts per month.

sci.techniques.mass-spec

Google hosts an interface to usenet. There is a fairly active forum (40 to 50 posts a month) about mass spec issues and techniques.

Proteome Software Forum

Proteome Software hosts a "Wiki" forum. In a wiki, you can not only add comments to any web page, you can change any web page and add your own pages. Proteome Software puts up articles about its Scaffold software to get things going, but encourages everyone to add content about mass spectrometry and proteomics.

Science Advisory Board Forum

The Science Advisory Board hosts an on-line bulletin board with sections on proteomics, bioinformatics, software, and protocols. The proteomics topic gets about 20 posts per month.

Bioinformatics.net

Bioinformatics.net is a bulletin board devoted to bioinformatics tools and software. There are reviews and opinions as well as techniques, troubleshooting and a special section for novices. So far, only a small part of this bioinformatics is relevant to proteomics.

ProtIG Forum at NIH

The NIH Proteomics Interest Group has a listserv (that is, an email list) which discusses techniques, materials and methods of interest to the NIH proteomics research community. So far this community has not been very active on their listserv.

Chromatography Forum

HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography) is the basis for much of the peptide separation used in proteomics experiments. This is an active forum with hundreds of posts per month. Proteomics related topics may found in the Liquid Chromatography or Hyphenated Techniques forums.

Proteomics Community Wiki

2D Gels are a common way to separate proteins in a proteomics experiment. This wiki reviews software used to analyze 2D gels and has discussions on 2D Gel Analysis, Statistics, and MIAPE gel informatics. MIAPE is an acronym for Minimum Information About Proteomics Experiments. A wiki like this site and the Proteome Software Forum lets you create or edit the pages.

spctools-discuss

This user group is an open forum for discussing and asking questions about the Seattle Proteome Center’s proteomics tools.

myProteome -- the proteomics IT blog

This blog has short announcements about a variety of proteomics topics. It seems to have one or two new articles posted each week. There is space here for you to leave comments on the blog entries, but so far comments are very few.

Mass Spectrometry blog

This web site bills itself as "a web log of mass spectrometry web sites and other links and items of interest." There is space here for you to leave comments on the blog entries, but so far comments are very few.
